History
Little Falls takes its name from a waterfall on the Passaic River that once spilled over the ledge downstream of the dam in front of the old Beattie Mill, and the township traces its story back to 1711. Before factories arrived, the local economy rested on farming and on quarrying brownstone; stone cut here went into Trinity Church in lower Manhattan. In 1780, during the Revolution, the area was the site of a military encampment.
Two pieces of infrastructure shaped the town in the 1800s. The Morris Canal, which opened in 1831 and ran 102 miles between the Delaware and the Hudson, crossed the Passaic at Little Falls on a great stone aqueduct, and remnants of its bed still pass through town. In 1842 Robert Beattie founded a carpet mill beside the falls. The Beattie family ran it until it closed in 1982, and for much of that time it was the township's largest employer, served by its own rail connection.
The oldest house still standing is the Reynier Speer House at 612 Upper Mountain Avenue. Its National Register listing, published in 1985, dates it to 1785 and recognizes it for its colonial architecture; some local accounts claim an earlier house of 1680 on the site, a date the record does not support. Little Falls was set up as a separate township in 1868, carved from Acquackanonk Township, and in 1914 part of its territory became the Borough of West Paterson, today's Woodland Park. In 2005, after a referendum, the township moved from a five-member township committee to an elected mayor and council under the Faulkner Act.
What it’s like to live there
Little Falls is a compact township of about 2.8 square miles wedged between Montclair, Wayne, Cedar Grove, Woodland Park, Totowa, North Caldwell, Fairfield and Clifton. It is mostly residential, with light industrial and office uses mixed in, and much of the housing stock dates from the past century. Main Street is the business district, and many homes sit within walking distance of its shops, the schools and township offices.
Three areas carry their own names. The center of town around Main Street is usually just called Little Falls. Singac is the western section, much of it bordering the Passaic River, and Great Notch is the easternmost section; Browertown is another old local name. The Beattie Mill complex beside the falls has been converted into apartments and condominiums, using five original mill buildings plus a nine-story tower, with most units facing the river or the falls.
A large share of Montclair State University's campus lies inside the township, along with Yogi Berra Stadium and the university's ice arena. Public schools are run by the Little Falls School District, with offices on Stevens Avenue, and Passaic Valley Regional High School stands at 100 East Main Street.
Getting around
U.S. Route 46 and Route 23 cross the township, and the Garden State Parkway and Interstate 80 are a short drive away. East Main Street (County Road 631) is the local spine between Little Falls and Woodland Park, and Union Avenue crosses the Passaic River, where a covered bridge stood as late as 1890.
Two NJ Transit stations on the Montclair-Boonton Line serve the township: Little Falls station and Montclair State University station. The line runs east through Montclair and Bloomfield toward Newark Broad Street, Secaucus Junction, Hoboken Terminal and New York Penn Station; at Hoboken riders can connect to PATH, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and NY Waterway ferries. West of town the line continues through Wayne, Lincoln Park and Boonton toward Dover and Hackettstown.
As of 2026, NJ Transit lists route 191 to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan as stopping at Little Falls, with local routes 28 and 705 also serving the station area. Newark Liberty International Airport is about 12 miles away. The Little Falls Morris Canal Bikeway follows part of the old canal route through town.
Things to do
Morris Canal Park offers a walk along the old canal from the Main Street business district to an overlook on the Passaic River near where the canal's stone aqueduct once stood. It is part of the Morris Canal Greenway that Passaic County is assembling through Little Falls, Woodland Park, Wayne, Clifton, Paterson and Pompton Lakes, and Little Falls Memorial Park and the county's Peckman Preserve appear on the same greenway map.
The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, at 8 Yogi Berra Drive on the Montclair State campus, covers Yogi Berra's life and baseball career and runs exhibits, film screenings, talks and education programs. Yogi Berra Stadium next door and the Montclair State University Ice Arena host games and skating on campus.
The Reynier Speer House on Upper Mountain Avenue, a house of 1785 listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the township's best-known historic building.

Town boundaries don’t always match ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross into neighboring towns, and a town can share a ZIP code with its neighbors. Facts describe the town itself; market figures describe whole ZIP codes.
