History
Guttenberg began as William Cooper's farm on top of the Hudson Palisades. In 1853 the farm was sold to the Weehawken Land and Ferry Association, a group of New York investors who divided it into building lots, much as was done in nearby Union Hill. The association also ran two ferries, the Hultz and the Flora, which crossed the Hudson from landings that included the foot of Bulls Ferry Road and Fort Lee to Spring Street in Manhattan.
Guttenberg was set up as a town on March 9, 1859, out of part of North Bergen Township. It joined the new Union Township in 1861 and became fully independent on April 1, 1878. The name is usually traced to Johannes Gutenberg, the printer, though some sources read it as a phrase meaning good village, and others point to the cliffs, since berg means mountain.
In 1983 The New York Times described the town as an old grid of two-story rowhouses, small stores and light industry. The skyline changed in the late 1970s, when the Prudential Insurance Company built the Galaxy Towers on Boulevard East: three octagonal towers of about 415 feet with more than a thousand apartments overlooking the river. In the decades since, condominium buildings have gone up along the riverfront below the cliffs.
What it’s like to live there
Guttenberg is one of the smallest municipalities in New Jersey by area, about four blocks wide from north to south, squeezed between West New York to the south and North Bergen to the north. It is also among the most densely built places in the country. The town falls into two levels: the upland grid on top of the Palisades, and a strip of riverfront below the cliffs.
On the upland, the older housing is largely two-story rowhouses, with Kennedy Boulevard along the western edge and Bergenline Avenue running north-south through the middle as the main commercial street. Park Avenue, where Town Hall stands at number 6808, works as a smaller main street. At the eastern edge, Boulevard East runs along the top of the cliffs, where the Galaxy Towers complex combines three 44-story towers and two shorter buildings with the Galaxy Mall at its center, home to a town resource center and the public library.
Below the cliffs, the waterfront has been rebuilt with condominium buildings, and the town required each project to extend the public Hudson River Waterfront Walkway along its frontage. The Guttenberg Public School District serves the town.
Getting around
Guttenberg has no rail station of its own and relies heavily on buses. NJ Transit buses use Bergenline Avenue through North Hudson; in 2025, for example, routes 156 and 159 used Bergenline Avenue toward the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. Routes and stops change, so current details are on NJ Transit's site.
The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway runs south from Guttenberg through West New York toward the Weehawken border, and walks organized by the Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy have used the NY Waterway terminal at Port Imperial as their starting point. The walkway gives a car-free route along the river for walking and cycling.
By car, Kennedy Boulevard and Boulevard East are the main north-south roads on the upland, and the town is small enough to drive through in about a minute. The town issues residential parking permits through its parking office.
Things to do
The waterfront is the main draw. The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway follows the river past the condominium buildings, with long views of the Manhattan skyline, and a small waterfront park built jointly by Guttenberg, North Bergen and Hudson County straddles the town line, a roughly $3 million project reported by Hudson County View.
Guttenberg Arts, a nonprofit arts center at 6903 Jackson Street, runs studios and classes in printmaking, letterpress, lithography, ceramics and papermaking, holds exhibition openings and free workshops, and keeps a garden used for outdoor cyanotype printing and native-plant programs.
The public library and the town's resource center are in the Galaxy Mall on Boulevard East, offering computer access, workspace and programs for all ages. Town recreation programs are run through the Recreation Department, and the town publishes the monthly Guttenberg Brief newsletter with local events, available online and in print at Town Hall.

Town boundaries don’t always match ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross into neighboring towns, and a town can share a ZIP code with its neighbors. Facts describe the town itself; market figures describe whole ZIP codes.
