History
Westfield grew out of the western farm fields of the Elizabethtown tract, the colonial grant that covered much of today's Union County. Settlement here dates to about 1699, when families from Elizabethtown spread west along two older Lenape trails, one of which became East Broad Street. The Miller-Cory House at 614 Mountain Avenue, built around 1740, survives from that farming era and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
The area stayed agricultural well into the 1800s. The railroad, later operated by the Central Railroad of New Jersey, began turning the village into a commuter suburb, and the town's biggest growth came between the 1880s and the 1950s. The present station buildings date from 1892 (north side) and the 1910s (south side). Westfield became the Town of Westfield in 1903, replacing the older Westfield Township.
Several landmarks from the railroad-suburb years still stand. The Westfield Fire Headquarters on North Avenue West and the 1870s William Edgar Reeve House at 314 Mountain Avenue are on the National Register, and the Stoneleigh Park Historic District, listed in 1988, preserves a planned enclave of Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival houses from the first half of the twentieth century. The town also has a Historic Preservation Commission that designates individual local landmarks.
What it’s like to live there
Westfield is organized around a downtown next to the train station, a compact cluster of late-1800s to mid-1900s commercial buildings with masonry fronts and street-level storefronts along East Broad, Elm and Prospect Streets. Commercial building stayed close to the rail line, while houses spread outward from that core during the town's long growth spurt between the 1880s and the 1950s, so the residential streets around it are largely filled with houses from those decades.
The rail line and Route 28 (North and South Avenues) split the town into what people call the North Side and the South Side. The Stoneleigh Park Historic District, bounded roughly by Westfield Avenue, Shackamaxon Drive, Rahway Avenue and Dorian Road, is a planned enclave of Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival houses from 1900 to the 1940s, and Mountain Avenue on the north side holds two of the town's oldest surviving houses. Individual older homes around town, such as a 1750s house on Ferris Place, carry local landmark designation.
Town parks are spread through the neighborhoods, including Mindowaskin Park beside the Municipal Building just east of downtown, with its pond, fountain and small stone bridge, as well as Tamaques, Brightwood and Gumbert parks. Westfield Public Schools serve the town.
Getting around
Westfield Station, between North and South Avenues at the foot of Summit Avenue, is on NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line. Most eastbound trains run to Newark Penn Station, where riders change for New York; a limited number of off-peak weekday trains run directly to New York Penn Station. Westbound trains continue through Plainfield and Somerville toward Raritan and High Bridge. The station is accessible, and as of 2026 several town lots around it offer daily and permit parking, with some permit lots limited to residents.
Route 28, which follows North and South Avenues beside the tracks, is the main road through town. U.S. Route 22 runs just north of Westfield, and the Garden State Parkway is reached to the east through neighboring towns. Newark Liberty International Airport is the nearest commercial airport, a short drive northeast, and Linden Airport handles general aviation.
The downtown blocks around the station are the most walkable part of town. Union County's paved multi-use paths through Echo Lake Park and Lenape Park, along the Rahway River corridor, are open to cyclists, while bikes are not allowed elsewhere in county parks.
Things to do
The Westfield Historical Society runs the Miller-Cory House Museum at 614 Mountain Avenue, a mid-1700s farmhouse operated as a living history museum by volunteers, open most Sundays from September through June. The society is based at the Reeve History and Cultural Resource Center at 314 Mountain Avenue, where its archives are open to the public and tours are by appointment.
Union County began developing Echo Lake Park in the 1920s, and since 1965 Lenape Park has linked it with Nomahegan Park in Cranford; both have paved paths and open space along the town's edge. Mindowaskin Park near the Municipal Building has been a winter skating spot for more than a century.
The Westfield Memorial Library at 550 East Broad Street grew out of a book club and a Carnegie-funded library of the early 1900s; it now has a makerspace, study rooms, local history resources and an events calendar that includes a jazz series and author talks. Downtown Westfield hosts recurring events through the year, including a jazz festival, a 5K and seasonal shopping nights, organized by the Downtown Westfield Corporation.

Town boundaries don’t always match ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross into neighboring towns, and a town can share a ZIP code with its neighbors. Facts describe the town itself; market figures describe whole ZIP codes.
