History
Pleasantville began as a string of homes along Old Shore Road, a stagecoach route that once linked Port Republic with what is now Somers Point. It was part of Egg Harbor Township until the late 1880s, when it split off as a borough, and it became a city on April 14, 1914. The name is credited to David Ingersoll, who found the setting pleasant.
Growth came with the electric rail lines that tied the mainland to Atlantic City. Trolley service reached Pleasantville in 1903, and the Atlantic City and Shore Railroad, the electric Shore Fast Line connecting Atlantic City and Ocean City, ran through the area from 1907 until the late 1940s. Most early development clustered around Main Street near the stops, and the abandoned trolley right-of-way later became the Pleasantville to Somers Point bike path.
The city has a few notable footnotes in sports history. The Boston Red Sox held spring training here in 1945, and from the 1940s into the 1960s a local boxing gym run by Laoma Byrd drew champions such as Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles and Sonny Liston to train.
What it’s like to live there
Pleasantville sits on the mainland about two miles from Atlantic City, bordered by Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Township, Absecon and Northfield. It is the most urban of the four communities along the county bike path, with a downtown along Main Street (County Route 585) that concentrates shops, medical offices and the city's bus terminal within walking distance of surrounding residential blocks.
Housing includes neighborhood single-family homes, condominiums, apartment buildings and some larger houses, and parts of the city have views of the Atlantic City skyline. The east side reaches the open water of Lakes Bay, where East Bayview Avenue leads to the municipal boat ramp. Commercial strips line the Black Horse Pike, home to more than a dozen car dealerships, and New Road (U.S. Route 9).
The waterfront is the focus of the city's newer plans: as of 2020 a Lakes Bay marina project called for dredging, about 50 boat slips and 180 apartments on a 25-acre site, and the city has secured a state Green Acres grant toward a waterfront park. Pleasantville Public Schools serve the city from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
Getting around
Several major roads meet in or beside Pleasantville. U.S. Route 9 (New Road) runs north-south through the city, U.S. Routes 40 and 322 follow the Black Horse Pike toward Atlantic City, County Route 585 is Main Street, and the Atlantic City Expressway has an exit (Exit 5) at New Road. The Garden State Parkway is close by for trips north toward New York or south along the shore.
NJ Transit buses run through the city and out of a downtown bus terminal, with routes reaching Atlantic City, Philadelphia and New York. As of 2025, local routes 502, 509, 554 and 559 operate in Pleasantville; route 502 runs from Atlantic City along the Black Horse Pike to Atlantic Cape Community College, and route 509 follows New Road toward Somers Point. The nearest train is the Atlantic City Rail Line at Absecon, next door, which runs daily to Philadelphia's 30th Street Station with connections to Amtrak and, at Lindenwold, to PATCO.
Atlantic City International Airport is about 15 minutes away by car, and Philadelphia International about an hour. For cyclists and walkers, the paved rail-trail to Somers Point starts in the city.
Things to do
The Pleasantville to Somers Point bike path, a paved rail-trail on the old trolley right-of-way, enters the city from Northfield after West Ridgewood Avenue, crosses the Black Horse Pike on an old railroad bridge and continues to West Decatur Avenue, with an extension to Devins Lane. The full route runs about 6.5 miles south through Northfield and Linwood to Somers Point.
Lakes Bay gives the city its waterfront. A municipal boat ramp at 344 East Bayview Avenue gives direct access to the bay, and the Pleasantville Yacht Club is part of the marina area the city is improving. The ramp lies within the coastal area of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, which protects more than 48,000 acres of mostly salt marsh; its 8-mile Wildlife Drive in nearby Galloway Township crosses salt marsh with observation towers and a boardwalk, open daily sunrise to sunset.
Atlantic City, about two miles away along the Black Horse Pike, is the region's center for casinos, the Boardwalk and nightlife, and the bike path's connection over the Route 52 bridge leads on toward Ocean City.

Town boundaries don’t always match ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross into neighboring towns, and a town can share a ZIP code with its neighbors. Facts describe the town itself; market figures describe whole ZIP codes.
