History
North Lauderdale was established as a city in 1963 and grew into a compact city of roughly five square miles next to Fort Lauderdale, and by 2020 the city's community development director described it as predominantly built out, meaning that most change now comes from reusing and redeveloping existing sites rather than clearing new land.
The city's more recent history includes Hurricane Irma in 2017. In the weeks after the storm, North Lauderdale posted damage reporting forms for buildings with severe structural damage, information on temporary blue roof coverings, and guidance on debris removal, including separate consent forms for debris pickup inside the city's private communities.
North Lauderdale Days, a free city festival held each April with concerts, games and fireworks, is the city's long-running annual celebration.
What it’s like to live there
North Lauderdale is a small, mostly residential suburb in central Broward County covering about five square miles just west of Fort Lauderdale. Because the city is close to fully built out, new homes and businesses mostly arrive through redevelopment of older parcels. Part of the housing is organized as private communities, which the city treated separately in its storm-cleanup procedures after Hurricane Irma.
McNab Road and Rock Island Road are among the main roads, and Hampton Boulevard meets McNab Road just west of Rock Island Road. Hampton Pines Park, at 7800 Hampton Boulevard, sits off McNab Road just west of Rock Island Road and is a wooded city park built around a lake.
Parks are spread through the city's neighborhoods. As of the city's Parks and Recreation pages, the department maintains 17 passive and active parks totaling more than 150 acres, along with a public pool and a sports complex used for leagues and city events.
Getting around
North Lauderdale's main streets include McNab Road and Rock Island Road, with Hampton Boulevard leading north from McNab Road.
Broward County Transit runs a community shuttle in North Lauderdale with an East/West route; like all of the county's community shuttles, it connects with the regular BCT fixed bus routes, is wheelchair accessible and carries bike racks. Questions about the shuttle go to the city at 954-724-7061.
Among the regular BCT routes, Route 62 has a timepoint at Kimberly Boulevard and SW 80th Avenue and runs east to McNab Road and U.S. 1, with a stop at the Cypress Creek Tri-Rail Station, where riders can transfer to commuter trains along the coast. As of its July 2023 timetable, the route runs seven days a week, with weekday buses about every 30 minutes and an end-to-end ride of roughly an hour and a half to an hour and 40 minutes. There is no rail station inside North Lauderdale.
Things to do
Hampton Pines Park, at 7800 Hampton Boulevard off McNab Road, is the city's main outdoor destination. It is built around a stocked lake used for fishing (a state fishing license is required) and boating, with kayak and paddleboat rentals, two playgrounds, two sand volleyball courts, a fitness and jogging trail, and lakeside picnic areas. Seven pavilions around the lake, each with grills and water and electric hookups, can be rented. At Halloween the park's woods become a haunted forest.
The Parks and Recreation Department runs a city calendar of events and programs. North Lauderdale Days, a free festival in April, brings concerts, games and a fireworks show, and the city's sports complex hosts an April egg hunt. The city pool holds dive-in movie nights, and recreation programs include spring and summer camps, days-off camps and outings for older adults.
City sports leagues cover soccer, basketball, baseball and cricket, as of the department's current listings.

Town boundaries don’t always match ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross into neighboring towns, and a town can share a ZIP code with its neighbors. Facts describe the town itself; market figures describe whole ZIP codes.
