History
Fountainebleau (the Census Bureau's spelling; the development itself was marketed as Fontainebleau) is a planned community from the 1970s on the western side of Miami-Dade County. Its name traces back to the Fontainebleau hotel on Miami Beach, which was itself named for the French chateau. Around 1970 the hotel's original owner, Ben Novack, set out to build his own golf course, resort and residential community on the mainland, to be called Fontainebleau Park.
Novack's money troubles, including this project, contributed to the hotel's foreclosure in 1977. The community was instead built by Trafalgar Developers, which kept the Fontainebleau name but did not tie it to the hotel in its advertising or press. Trafalgar laid out Fontainebleau Park as a set of subdivided villages around two 18-hole golf courses, the East and West courses. Its original sales office stood at the main entrance on West Flagler Street, a site now occupied by the Fontainebleau Office Park, and the later Fontainebleau Park West section west of NW 97th Avenue had its own sales office, since converted into a condominium building.
Both golf courses have since closed and been built over. The Women's Park on West Flagler Street, founded in 1992, became one of the area's public landmarks.
What it’s like to live there
Fountainebleau is an unincorporated Census-designated community with no city government. Miami-Dade County provides zoning, roads, parks and libraries, and zoning and land-use cases in unincorporated areas go before one of the county's ten elected community councils before reaching the County Commission.
The housing reflects the original Trafalgar plan. The eastern half was designed mainly for condominiums and apartments. The western portion, including Fontainebleau Park West beyond NW 97th Avenue, mixed small single-family houses with garden homes, so-called village homes and townhouses. Later construction filled in the land where the two golf courses once were.
West Flagler Street is the main spine, with the Fontainebleau Office Park at the old entrance, shopping centers along the corridor and Florida International University's Engineering Center at 10555 West Flagler Street. Streets follow the county's numbered grid, with NW 97th and NW 107th Avenues as major north-south roads. The cities of Doral and Sweetwater sit close by, and the main FIU campus lies to the south along SW 8th Street.
Getting around
Fountainebleau is car-oriented. West Flagler Street is the main east-west road, running east toward downtown Miami, which lies roughly 10 miles away, and NW 97th and NW 107th Avenues carry north-south traffic. State Road 836 and State Road 826 are the nearest expressways, and SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail) runs to the south.
There is no Metrorail service in the area; transit is by Metrobus routes on the main roads. The Dolphin Station park-and-ride at 12065 NW 12th Street in neighboring Doral is a hub for the area: since March 2, 2020 it has served as a stop for 836 Express buses, which use red bus-only shoulders on SR 836 when traffic slows, and it also handles local bus routes serving Dolphin Mall and trolleys from Sweetwater and Doral. Parking there is free for transit riders.
Miami International Airport, to the east, is the nearest major airport.
Things to do
The Women's Park at 10251 West Flagler Street is the community's best-known public space. Opened on June 16, 1992 and described by the county as the first park in the nation dedicated to women, it covers about 15 acres around a lake, with a walking path, the Leona Ferguson Cooper Playground, a lakeside picnic pavilion that can be rented, an art installation by Miami artist Lydia Rubio, and the Roxcy O'Neal Bolton Women's History Gallery, named for the activist who conceived the park.
The nearest Miami-Dade Public Library branches are the International Mall Branch at 10315 NW 12th Street in Doral and the Tamiami Branch at 12700 SW 8th Street. Florida International University's Engineering Center sits on West Flagler Street, and the university's main campus on SW 8th Street is a short drive south.
Shopping in the area is centered on the plazas along West Flagler Street and the large regional malls nearby, including Dolphin Mall beside the Dolphin Station transit hub.

Town boundaries don’t always match ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross into neighboring towns, and a town can share a ZIP code with its neighbors. Facts describe the town itself; market figures describe whole ZIP codes.
