About these numbers

Average household income is the total income of all households in a ZIP code divided by the number of households; median household income is the middle household. Both come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates. The Census caps medians at $250,000 and home values at $2,000,000, so the average income and the price per square foot from recent sales (where there were enough sales) show the differences at the top. Averages run higher than medians because a few very high earners pull them up.

Home value is what owners estimate their homes are worth. Town names are the postal place names for each ZIP code. Click a town to see its housing market: how competitive it is, how fast homes sell and what buyers are paying.

Questions

What is the richest ZIP code in America?

Miami Beach, FL (33109), with an average household income of $755,945, among ZIP codes with at least 1,000 residents (Census 2020–2024 estimates).

Why do many ZIP codes show a median of $250,000+?

The Census Bureau doesn’t publish exact medians above $250,000; it reports them as $250,000 or more. That’s why we rank by average household income, which isn’t capped.

Why is price per square foot missing for some towns?

It comes from recent home sales, so ZIP codes with very few sales in the last three months don’t have it.

* The Census Bureau doesn’t publish exact figures above $250,000 for household income, $2,000,000 for home values or $3,500 for monthly rent; it reports them as “or more.”
